About half of the 568 test participants held the nicotine patch for 24 weeks. The rest he has had one for eight weeks while the rest of the days (16 weeks) was applied a placebo product without nicotine.
At the end of six months 89 people who have had the patch for as long as they have not smoked for 7 days in a row against 58 of those who had the placebo . After a year there was no difference between the two groups at a rate of 14% of people who have quit smoking. The main obstacles to
'use of the nicotine patch are the high cost and side effects such as skin rash, headache, nausea and sleep disturbances, although the researchers found no significant difference in the intensity of side effects between those who did complete treatment for 6 months and those in the placebo group.
